Not Quite Ready To Invest?
Listen, we get it. This is a huge decision to make, but getting implants is more than just a way to fix some missing teeth.
As a common intervention for tooth loss, dental implants can offer your more than just a stunning smile. They will also give you your quality of life back.
If you lose a tooth and don’t replace it, there is a domino effect. One small shift will turn into another and another, and so on. It can cause more problems that can affect your life more than just your smile.
You will experience a greater risk for:
- Gum disease.
- TMJ-related issues.
- Teeth crowding.
- Lost bone and facial muscle support.
That’s why dental implants are different than any other tooth-replacement option. Not only do they replace the tooth, but the root as well. Your implants will be created specifically for you and will feel as reliable as natural teeth.
Improving your smile isn’t the only positive aspect implants can make on your life.
Dental Implants Will Improve Your Life
Your dental implants will have many aesthetic benefits but they will also help the overall function of your mouth. Dental implants will:
- Replace missing teeth.
- Protect facial structure.
- Prevent bone density loss.
- Stop shifting in its tracks.
- Support a healthy bite and jawbone.
- Enable natural speech.
Your self-esteem and confidence are as important as your ability to eat comfortably. With dental implants, you can smile and laugh without pain or worrying about what others will think. The decision to get implants will impact your whole life for the better!
At Daniel Sheridan DDS, we create lasting smiles. Dental implants are a huge part of that! We want to help you make sure this decision is right for you.

How Does the Process Work?
Most people who come in for dental implants have the same questions. What does the process look like, and what can I expect?
Overall, it will take several months from your first appointment to the final product.
Your Initial Consultation:
We start with an initial consultation and exam. This allows us to go through the process in person and we can personalize your experience to your specific needs. During the exam, our dentist will determine the condition of your jawbone to design your treatment plan.
Your jaw needs to be strong to handle the pressure of chewing to protect your implant. If your jaw needs some extra bone, your dentist will graft some from another area of your jawbone away from the implant area. This will be determined in your initial exam.
This initial evaluation will include:
- X-rays.
- Impressions.
- Color matching to your natural teeth.
Together with Dr. Sheridan, you will determine how many teeth you want to replace and discuss all your medical conditions and medications. It is possible that if you have remaining teeth that need to be replaced that your dentist will remove them before any other dental work is performed.
The Day of Your Procedure:
For your implant procedure, we’ll refer you to a trusted specialist. During the procedure, your oral surgeon specialist will use the anesthesia option you both discussed. They will then insert the dental implant and do any bone grafting necessary.
After the implant is added to your jawbone, your jawbone will start to grow around the implant in the next 3–9 months. This means that your implant will become part of your actual gum line.
Once your implant is ready, your specialist will place an abutment on top of your implant that connects to your crown. After your gums heal, Dr. Sheridan will finally make and secure your artificial tooth or crown.
After Your Initial Surgery:
After the surgery, it is natural to have some discomfort. You may see some bruising on your gums and face, as well as, some bleeding. This is completely normal and nothing to be afraid of. The bruising will heal quickly.
Although the process is long, it is worth it. As your dental family, we will be with you every step of the way to answer your questions and help you go through each step comfortably as well. During our initial consultation, we will help map out each part of the process for your personal needs. That way you will know exactly what to expect at every stage of the process.
Dental Implant FAQs:
Do Implants Work and Look Like Natural Teeth?
Dental implants are specially made to work exactly like a regular tooth and we will craft them to match the color of the rest of your teeth!
The titanium roots of your implants will be embedded in the jawbone, ensuring that they will be stable for you. The titanium will fuse with your jawbone to create a reliable foundation.
That, coupled with the strength of your jawbone, means you won’t have any issues biting and chewing. You will be able to carry on with your life without even thinking about the new implants. They will quickly become as normal to you as your natural teeth are.
They’re so much like natural teeth that you will still have to make sure to take care of your implants. Your implants will still have the possibility of gathering bacteria. So just like your natural teeth, you’ll have to brush and floss regularly.
How Do I Take Care of My Implants?
If you take care of your dental implants, they will take care of you for the rest of your life. This amazing treatment will give you a permanent solution to your current dental problems, especially if you continue to take care of them long after you walk out of our office.
Care for your implants the same way you would take care of your natural teeth:
- Brush at least twice a day.
- Floss regularly.
- Finish up with some mouthwash.
The only difference to your daily routine we would suggest is to use a water floss to clean under your new teeth. That way you can ensure that you are getting your implants as clean as possible.
How Painful Is the Process?
This is a question that many people have when coming into the office, even if they don’t ask the questions specifically. There is no shame in ever asking how painful a procedure might be. This can help you mentally prepare for what is to come.
Thankfully, by using anesthesia, there is nothing to be afraid of. You won’t feel any pain during the procedure. Most people who go through the procedure report that they experienced little to no discomfort. Many of them even say that it was even better than a normal tooth extraction.
Periods of Healing
Throughout the implant process, your jawbone will need to heal. There might be some discomfort felt for a few weeks following the procedure.
With multiple steps, it’s not a procedure you can get done in one visit. As a team, we do everything we can to ensure you have the most comfortable experience possible. You will not begin the process without feeling 100% confident in your choice.
No matter what part of the process you are at, we will help answer any questions as they arise, and help you navigate the process from start to finish.
Are Dental Implants the Right Choice for Me?
While most everyone is a good candidate for implants, great candidates will have healthy gums and be old enough that their jawbone isn’t still growing.
However, if you have lost bone in your jaw, that doesn’t mean you’re not a good candidate. Implants may be an effective way to prevent further bone loss.
People with the highest risk of poor outcomes include those with:
- Cancer.
- Smoking habits.
- Alcoholism.
- Uncontrolled diabetes.
- Gum disease.
If you fall under one of those categories, you may still be a good candidate. We will thoroughly assess your situation during your initial consultation.
Dental implants have a very high success rate for patients. If you are considering implants we will make sure to help you find the ideal option for you.
What Should I Do To Prepare for Surgery?
Preparing for any type of surgery can be nerve-wracking. Here are some tips to help you mentally prepare yourself for your oral surgery.
Ask Your Surgeon Lots and Lots of Questions
The more informed you are, the more confident you will feel in your choice. Our team is happy to answer whatever questions you have when it comes to your mouth and teeth. No question is too small or too big. We want you to feel as peaceful and calm going into your surgery as possible.
We understand that going to the dentist is not on the top of everyone’s list. However, getting the answers to your questions can help you to feel as informed as possible when it comes to your procedure.
Get Ready for Recovery
If you prepare beforehand, you can come to your scheduled surgery feeling relaxed. All you’ll need to do is arrive on time and let your surgeon do the rest.
You can best prepare by:
- Schedule a few days off work.
- Stock your fridge and pantry with soft food that is easy to eat.
- Fill out any prescriptions your dentist has prescribed for you.
- Find someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours.
- Avoid caffeine for 1 week and alcohol 72 hours before your surgery.
- Stop eating and drinking after midnight before your appointment.
If you’re still nervous the day before, take the time to treat yourself. Do something for yourself to help get your mind off the impending surgery. Remind yourself of your reasons for getting your dental implants, and know that your dental team has your back.
